Data Governance

Course objective

Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of effective data governance in an organisation.  They will learn the basic concepts in data governance, the critical elements of a data governance framework, and the allocation of roles and responsibilities of key people in an organisation.  They will also receive practical guidance on developing a data governance framework for an organisation.  It also includes references to key international data governance policy documents.

Course content

1. Introduction to Data Governance – Explain what data governance is, its importance, and how it impacts organizations. Highlight the benefits of implementing data governance, such as improved data quality, risk mitigation, and business value.  Learn about important policy and legal frameworks.
2. Foundational Elements – Learn about key data governance concepts. Understand the relationship between data governance and data quality. Explore the role of data ethics in an organisation.
3. Roles and Responsibilities – Discuss the roles involved in data governance (e.g., data stewards, data owners, data users). Explain the responsibilities of data governance role players and how they collaborate to ensure effective governance. Understand the role of a data ethics officer.
4. Data quality – Learn about the elements of data quality. Explore strategies for maintaining data quality. Understand the importance of ensuring data accuracy and consistency.
5. Data governance implementation – Receive practical guidance on implementing data governance within an organization. Explore case studies of successful data governance implementation. Develop your own data governance framework.
6. International Data Governance Policies and Regulations – Explore European Union policies and regulations. Explore African Union policies and regulations. Explore South African policies and regulations.
